Gavin Penn

Gavin was born in 1976 in Linlithgow, Scotland. At the age of Ten Gavin moved from Scotland to Northumberland. He returned to Scotland to attend Edinburgh College of Art. He graduated in 1999 with a BA (Hons) in Painting and Drawing. His degree show focused around Sport in art having previously in 1998 won the Vaux Prize for Art in Sunderland with his paintings being selected for the Stadium of Light Directors suites. Gavin has spent some time working as a mural artist for an interior design company. He painted various themes including Greek gods, film stars and an entire room painted as a Jungle for a very famous boxers manager. He now lives and works in Northumberland. His current work continues his interest in painting people and features ballet dancers, initially inspired by the visit of Ballet Central to his local theatre. He says, “ My paintings are about light, colour and reflections. I want to paint the dancers as the athletes they are, graceful, beautiful and strong with refined musculature. I aim to depict movement and to capture expression and emotion. Dancers are proving to be a very rich source of inspiration and I am enjoying my paintings more than ever”. Recently Gavin was pleased to attend the Northern Ballet theatre’s stunning production of, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and this has resulted in his latest work.
